9 Steps to Positioning Yourself as an Expert

Tonight, I turned on the TV expecting to see the usual junk on tv, only to see that I was actually interested in watching an infomercial on tv. Why? The topic of the program was “How to create an expert coaching business.”  In fact I recognized the educator on the informercial as Brendon Burchard, creator of The Experts Academy.  Experts Academy is a training program that was heavily promoted in the fall of 2010, so I knew this show was going to be good.

The following is Brendon’s list of the 9 Steps required in positioning yourself as an expert coach in your field.

1.  Value what you know.  Do not discredit yourself.

  • “Hey.. how’d you do that?”
  • “Where’d you learn how to do that?”
  • “Could you help me do that?”

Then people value what you know!

What do people ask you about?

You can charge money for these answers!

2.  Value your life experiences.

Build your experiences into a business model.

You’ve been traveling through life in a specific way for a reason!

3.  Claim your topic.

What would you love to teach?

What comes naturally?

You claim it!  Go out and do it.  Do not wait for others to give you permission!

4. Decide who you want to help.

Do the research!  Who else would want the results of your research? They can become your customers!

5.  Whats the best way to deliver your message?

What do you have to do in order for someone to learn from your message?

Chunk down what you know so that someone else can learn from you.  Action steps!

    Awesome post Cory!

I totally agree with life experiences. People don’t always necessarily want the “how to” nowadays… They’re looking to benefit from your experiences and expertise that you can bring to the table.

Social media is word of mouth on steroids! Glad I learned about Facebook groups from you and the Building a Brand Online crew.

    Keep on Rockin’

Cory, thanks so much for posting this! I think Brendan is a genius and You are a lot like him, but you have the added advantage of being able to do it all. And that’s not to take anything away from Brendan. I think I know what Marcelle wants to talk to me about… the life experiences really do resonate and add elements that are real, genuine and in many ways mirror your customers and clients struggles. It is clearly the way to stake a claim on topics that brand you and show your stuff, the right stuff.

Telling a story is one of crucial elements when we are creating infornation products. But having a bunch of knowledge wont help you much. What is delivering value today is actually inspiring people to take action!

Making good info products is also good communication skills, so its not only learning, but also Motivating people like Tony Robins does.

This is MY kind of post! Thanks, Cory, for sharing Brendon’s message here.

The one line that jumped right off the page at me …

“You are worth more than you imagine.”

Don’t really know why it is, but I’m so guilty of discounting myself. It’s not a matter of low self-esteem or any of the other ‘deep’ psychologies. I think it’s more about losing sight of the fact that I’m in business and just wanting to help people when they reach out to me for assistance. I’m working on it! I’m beginning my ‘therapy’ by suggesting an “exchange” of services. I’m a huge advocate for bartering. :)

I can easily see why this post is being shared all over the map!
