Goal setting is really not difficult. What’s tough is bringing your goals to fruition. It’s been said that “goals are just dreams with a deadline”.
We all dream, but the people that turn their dreams into goals and then go on to accomplish them, are the successful dreamers.
Here are 7 steps to help you stay focused and give you the added push you will need to achieve your goals.
‘1. Start with the S.M.A.R.T goals strategy
“Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.” – Tom Landry
Specific: State exactly what you want to accomplish (Who, What, Where, Why)
Measurable: How will you demonstrate and evaluate whether or not the goal has been met?
Attainable: You must be able to achieve the desired outcome of your goals.
Relevant: How is your goal aligned with your values and objectives? If it is not important to you, it is not worth pursuing.
Time-Bound: Set 1 or more target dates. Include deadlines, dates and frequencies to guide your goals to timely completion.
‘2. Commit your goals to paper (write them down)
“I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I write and I understand.” – Chinese Proverb
Writing down your goals gives you clarity. It stimulates creativity and it frees up room in your brain to think about what’s necessary to achieve them. It makes them real.
‘3. Break your goals down to smaller steps
“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!”
Sometimes big goals can seem a bit overwhelming to achieve. By breaking them down into daily or weekly action items big goals become manageable.
‘4. Be excited by your goals
“If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.” – Albert Einstein
Your goals should have you springing out of bed. They should excite you and bring you joy. If they don’t you may need to re-think them.
‘5. Create an action plan and stick to it!
“It always seems impossible, until it’s done”. – Nelson Mandela
The best gift you can give yourself is a well thought-out action plan. Take time to organize all of your smaller daily and weekly goals in one place so you can easily check your progress or send it to others to hold you accountable.
‘6. Set goals for every area of your life
“Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life.” – Les Brown
Your goals should not just be for your career aspirations. You should set financial goals, spiritual goals, health goals, family goals, and fitness goals. For every area of your life that is important to you having a goal will help you stay on track.
‘7. Speak favor over your goals
“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” – Zig Ziglar
By speaking about your goals in positive terms you speak favor over them. Setting and achieving your goals changes you. Your outlook on life becomes renewed.
“Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.” –Les Brown
In your goal setting, use these 7 steps to help you stay focused.
Take proactive steps to reach your goals and ask yourself if what you are doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow.
